「百人一首英訳」が完成!

Finished Translation “One Hundred Poems from One Hundred Poets” into English!

🌙🌗🌑

3か月かかり、2016. 111()、「百人一首英訳」が完了しました。途中、高校英語教師の荒井 豊先生も興味を示され、ご一緒に英訳作業を楽しみました。お知恵をいただきありがとうございました。先生は高校の英語授業に使うそうです。

I started translation it into English last August, finishing that last Tuesday, November 1. On the way, one of my friends, Mr. Yutaka Arai, an English teacher of a senior high school joined me; we enjoyed the translation together. He gave me lots of good suggestions; thanks a lot. He told me he would use it in his school lessons.

LL教室とM-PEC講座でゲームとして活用するために英訳しました。これは、カードに加工する直前のものです。絵札と読み札(英語)は切り離して使用します。

Originally, I did this work for English games at both LL Shihoya Arai School and M-PEC Monthly Lesson: YEA (Yoshy’s English Activity). – This sample picture is just before the cards for the game. We cut it into two: picture cards and English reading ones.

いろは雑学:五十音、ローマ字との対比 2023.10.09 From Blog

Even the colorful blossoming flowers are *fragrant, but they will eventually scatter.

Who in our world shall be at all? The deep mountains of *karma — we cross them today… And we have had *moony dreams, not to be drunken.

About Chiyogami and Traditional Japanese Patterns

■千代紙とは、和紙に草花や動物などの様々な図柄を色刷りしたものを言います。What is chiyogami? It is traditional Japanese papers, such as flower or animal patterns.

■松竹梅や鶴亀など、千代(末永く栄えること)を祝う図柄(めでた柄)が多かったことから「千代紙」と呼ばれるようになったと言われます。

Some say chiyogami got its name from the many delightful patterns printed on it that celebrate chiyo, or eternal prosperity. Two examples are the pine, bamboo and plum pattern and the crane and turtle pattern.

■また一説には、千代田城(江戸城の別名)の大奥の女中たちがよくつかったことから付いた名だとも言われています。

Other say it was named after Chiyoda Castle, also known as Edo Castle, where it was often used by the female servants employed in the inner chambers of the Shogun and his wives.

■そのルーツをたどってゆくと、京都の公家たちが手紙や和歌を書く紙に装飾を施したことに始まります。Looking back on its roots, we find that chiyogami was invented when court nobles in Kyoto began to decorate the paper on which they wrote letters and Japanese waka poems.

■やがて中国伝来の模様や鶴亀等の吉祥柄を描くようになり、江戸時代に入ると錦絵の技法(浮世絵に用いられた木版多色刷り技法)や江戸の町衆との生活とも結びついて多彩なデザインを描くために活用されるようになりました。

It eventually came to have good luck patterns such as traditional Chinese designs and the crane and turtle pattern printed on it. In the Edo era, the technique of nishiki-e (a multicolored woodblock print technique used in ukiyo-e) was utilized to depict everyday scenes from the lives of townsfolk in Edo, and many new bright and colorful designs were produced.

■こうして、庶民に親しまれる「江戸千代紙」が生まれ、現在でも折り紙のほか、小箱などの細工物や人形の衣装などに広く用いられています。

Edo chiyogami, which was popular among the common people, was created in this way. Today it is still widely used for origami, decorative boxes, doll clothing and more.

■江戸千代紙に描かれる図柄の多くは日本の伝統模様です。Many of the designs printed on edo chiyogami are traditional Japanese patterns.

■大きく分けると、植物模様、動物模様、幾何模様(単純化、象徴化された図形が連続されているもの)、天象地模様(天地の様子や自然現象を図案化したもの)、器物模様(生活の道具や身の回りの品々を図案化したもの)に分類されます。

They are classified as botanical patterns, animal patterns, geometric patterns (continuous simplified or symbolic figures), celestial patterns (designs found in the universe and natural phenomena) and utensil patterns (designs of everyday tools and personal articles)

■これらの模様は日本人の生活や風習と密接なかかわりを持ち、幸運を引き寄せたり、魔除けとしての意味を持ったりするものもあります。

These patterns are not only related to Japanese life, manners and customs, but are also thought to bring good luck and act as talismans against evil.

■現代でも着物や浴衣地、手ぬぐい、焼き物の器の絵柄等に見られるほか、有名ブランドの衣料品のデザインに応用される例も少なくありません。

Nowadays, they are still seen on kimonos and yukatas (cotton summer kimonos), hand towels and ceramics, and on famous brand name clothing.
