「ヨッシーのエリーの尻尾」：Yoshy’s Erie’s tail
今年のLLシホヤ新井教室の英語劇は、「ネコにスズを」：Belling the Cat です。可愛い物語なので、ネズミやネコは、小学生が中心です。
English Drama by elementary school students of LL Shihoya Arai School will be “Belling the Cat”, in which mice and cats would be very cute, Yoshy hopes!
中高生が多いクラスに、このお話しを英語で紹介しました。スズをつけられて、引っ越してゆくネコのイラストを見せた時です。
Yoshy told this story the higher leveled classes in English, in which junior/senior students learn. When Yoshy showed the picture of the cats with bells which were moving from the house …
女子中学生の一人が、「ネコの尻尾、可愛い！」と言いました。ヨッシーが、「英語で言ってよ！」…すると、 “The cat’s tail is cute” ときちんと答えてくれました。
One of girl-students said, “Cat’s tail is very cute!” in Japanese. I asked her to say it in English. She again said the above.
ヨッシーの愛犬、Erieは、ほとんどのクラスの希望で、レッスン中、教室にいます。犬を怖がる子もいますが。
Erie, Yoshy’s pet-dog is usually stays in most classes with LL students, because most students love her very much, too. Some are worry about a dog, though.
「ヨッシーのエリーの尻尾は可愛い」って、どういうの？と質問しました。apostrophe-sを知っているクラスですので、声は揃いませんでしたが、ちゃんと、 [“Yoshy’s / Erie’s tail / is cute.”] と言ってくれましたが、この発音の仕方、変ですね。
Next, Yoshy asked them, “Everyone, how do we say in English?” They didn’t say the sentence fluently; their way of saying was coming apart.
[“Yoshy’s / Erie’s tail.”]では、「ヨッシーは、エリーの尻尾です。」と聞こえますね。全員が大笑い！
If we say any English sentence apart, i.e. in this case, it is heard like, “Yoshy is Erie’s tail.” They burst into laughter! Yes, they know an English intonation well.
一人の男子生徒が言いました。「学校でかっこいい発音すると、周りから、『ええ、カッコして！』とか、『キザ！』と陰口をたたかれるから、苛められやすいから…うーん、困ったご時勢です。
One boy student said to me, “I know what you are right, but if we speak English very fluently in our junior high school, we would be teased, being said; “You are pushy!” or “You are flashy!” They would be easily bullied in their class, they know. Hum… How troublesome we are now in this bad time.
