「スモーク・フリー・レストラン」って、たばこを吸えるの、吸えないの？： Can we smoke in a smoke-free restaurant?
答えは、「吸えません。」
The answer is No; we can’t smoke there.
LLシホヤ新井教室の準2級レベルクラス (A1)の教材 (deep listening-2, L.5)の中に、こんな表現が出てきました。 “This mall is a smoke-free environment.”
「このショッピングセンターでは、喫煙自由です。」と考えた生徒が多いことにびっくりしました。
Yoshy was surprised to know most student in the class regarded “smoke-free” as smoking is permitted in the mall.
分かりやすく説明しました。 “-free”は、「～から自由な = ～から解放された」と。
Yoshy explained this carefully; “-free” means we are free or released from ～”.
