今回は、2009年1月～3月：10コラムをUP! その一部をご紹介：This time, “10 articles” were uplorded!: From #083 to #092 from 2009.01-03. Let me introduce one of them, please.
083:【イギリスって、英語？】
LL教室で、英語を一生懸命学んでくれている中学、高校生たちに、「イギリスの正式名称は？」、と聞いたところ、約半数が言えませんでした。大抵、英和辞典のカバー裏に掲載されているイギリスの地図に書いてあります。正式名称は、「イギリス連合王国」：The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland、略して、The United Kingdom、もっと短くして、UKですね。アメリカ合衆国が ご存じ、The United States of America、略して、USA または、USとよく使うのに、The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelandは、長すぎる所為か、馴染みが薄いようです。
まして、「なぜ、UKをイギリスって言うの？」と尋ねると、中高生のほとんどがお手上げでした。「イギリス」は、Inglez というポルトガル語: Portugueseに由来しています。織田信長が台頭し始めた1550年ごろから日本で使われる外国語といえば、ポルトガル語が中心でした。この "Inglez" が「イングレズ」→「イギリス」として日本語の中に定着していったようです。
因みに、現在の「イギリス」は、England、 Wales、 Scotland、 Northern Ireland からなっていますが、次のような歴史をたどっています。
1536年 England に Wales が併合される。Wales was annexed by England in 1536.
1707年 England に Scotland が併合されました。
1801年 England に Ireland が併合されました。
1922年 England から Ireland が独立しました。
1974年 プロテスタント: Protestantの多い Northern Ireland が England 統治下に戻りました。
この歴史を踏まえると、1550年ごろに日本語に入ってきたと思われるInglez「イギリス」という表現は、当時は現在の Wales、 England を指していたと言えるでしょうね。
まとめますと、
Great Britain ＝(というのは) England、 Wales、 Scotland
United Kingdom ＝(というのは) Great Britain ＋ Northern Ireland
ということになります。歴史の長さと重みを感じますね。

新旧市民体育館画像：2009.02.7 vs. 2013.07.10
The old and new Citizen’s Gyms shot on February 7th 2009 and July 10th this year.
エリーが座っている場所は、今は、7月7日(日)に落成した新市民体育館の駐車場になっています。
The spot Erie is sitting in the picture was changed into a parking lot of the new Gym opened on Sunday, July 7th.
旧市民体育館前にある噴水は、今はありません。
The fountain in front of the old Gym was gone away.
緑色の旧市民体育館と公民館は、多分今年中になくなるでしょう。
Yoshy guesses both the old Gym and the present Public Hall colored green are going to be removed in this year.
LLシホヤ新井教室の1970年代、英語劇やLL スピーチコンテストなどで使わせて頂きました。
