Dare in a Summer Night – Time to Think - (Part 1)

The practice of the 36th LL Speech Contest is now in full swing in LL Shihoya Arai School.

There is additional part, “the students have to try to tell his/her own opinion or thought” on each recitation, which is from PC-class (the levels are from the 5th to Pre-1st of Eiken).

For example, according to “The Tortuous Lives for Ten Thousand Years” of PD class …

Relying on the pet shopkeeper’s words: “this tortuous will live for ten thousand years”; the gardener bought it quickly. But, …

His tortuous died the next day, then he went to the shopkeeper to complain of its death,; however, …

The pet shopkeeper said to him, “So today was the tortoise’s birthday. It must be ten thousand years.” – That sounds like a punch line of a rakugo, Japanese sit-down comedy.

Yoshy tried to ask all the six students of the class as it is written at the last question of their recitation, “Well, everyone, how do you think the gardener will say to the shopkeeper?” (Q-As between Yoshy and them were in Japanese in this case.)

In this case, there is very few customers would retire back home, saying, “I see.” There must be lots of replies to the shopkeeper. For example, … “Hey! Anyone can see if the tortuous is just before its death or not!”, “Cool excuse! You can get a cushion!”, etc.

I was sorry, in their last lesson; most of all could give Yoshy no answers; two of the six were thinking earnestly, Yoshy observed their faces.

In general terms, most Japanese elementary school students of today have been given so many things by adults such as not only “how to learn”, but also even “how to play” and “good manners”. So to speak, “good opportunities to stretch children’s originality and ingenuity” are rapidly increasing, aren’t they?
