関東地方の大雪と挨拶：Heavy Snowfall at Kanto-area and Greetings

2月15日(土)、予報通り、関東地方が大雪に見舞われました。
Just as the weatherman had predicted, Kanto-area had heavy snowfall on Saturday, February 15th.
120年ぶりとか…。大変なご不便、お察し申し上げます。
I heard it was *the first time in 120 years… I can see how much inconvenience you have.

This picture thrown open was shot in Fuchu-city, Tokyo on Saturday, February 15th. They are walking on a narrow path.
ここ、雪国・新井かと見間違うほどの大雪ですね。

ヨッシーの大学学生寮がその辺りにありましたので、都会生活の5年間を思い出しています。
This picture brought the days of my staying for five years in Tokyo to mind, because Yoshy started living in the college dormitory, which was around there.

都会生活を始めたばかりの日、まずびっくりしたのは、歩行者がすれ違っても、挨拶は皆無に近かったことでした。
What I was surprised at the most as soon as I started living there was that any *passersby *went by without so much as a greeting.

たぶん、この写真の人達は、普段言わない「挨拶」を交わしておられたのではないでしょうか？
I guess, probably these passersby must have had “greetings” which hadn’t been used until then.
傘の雪が前後の人にかかれば、「あ、すみません」。道を譲ってくれた時には、「どうも、ありがとうございます」…等など。
E.g. when the snow on one’s umbrella had *fallen on another passerby, he/she would have said to him/her, “Excuse me.” When had been *made way for him, he would have said, “Thanks a lot.”, etc.

近年は、雪国・新井の私たちですら、雪が解けてしまえば、都会の無関心に逆戻り…「喉もと過ぎれば熱さを忘れる」ご時勢ではあります。
In recent years, even we who live in snow country, Arai seem to *relapse into *unconcern in urban cities. … As the proverb says, “*Once on shore, we pray no more.”

災害に遭われたのに、不謹慎な感想に聞こえたかも知れませんね。毎日雪と格闘している雪国人間の一人、ヨッシーに免じてお許しを。
Despite being *suffered from such a disaster, some might read this as Yoshy’s *indiscreet impression. If so, please *make allowances for me who am one of the people here fighting against snow every day.

2月16日(日)、LLシホヤ新井教室・体験レッスンご予約は、二組様だけでしたので、終わってから、午後2:00～4:00頃にかけて、Rと赤倉へドライブに行ってきました。
On Sunday, February 16th, after finishing the free trial lesson for only a couple of visitors, Yoshy and R enjoyed driving to Akakura around from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
エリーにとっても、久しぶりの気分転換でした。(英語の諺)：「草地を代えれば子牛も太る」
(An English proverb): “Changing pastures makes fat calves.”
赤倉温泉の銀座通りは、スノーボードを担ぐ人達ばかりでした。
We saw all the walking visitors carrying snowboards; we didn’t see anyone who had ski-sets on the main street, Ginza of Akakura Spa.
