PD, A4, A3 "Time Will Tell" 「

① A poor but wise Chinese farmer named Chuang Lee lived in the mountains many, many years ago. His farm had some geese, cows, pigs and one horse. The horse was the most special to him.

② One day, before spring plowing time began, his beloved horse ran away. Chuang’s neighbors felt sorry for him. They said, “Where did your special horse go? What bad luck you have!” Chuang just shrugged his shoulders and said, “Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows? Only time will tell.”

③ His 25-year-old son helped him to plow the field. Three weeks after his running away, the horse appeared again running out of the forest. This time, it came back with four wild horses!

④ Chuang’s neighbors saw this and said, “Where did these horses come from? You have five horses now! What good luck!” He shrugged his shoulders again and said, “Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows? Only time will tell.”

⑤ One day, his son was trying to tame the wild horses. While riding one, he fell off and broke his leg. The neighbors sympathized again with Chuang, “You’re having bad luck again. Your injured son can’t help you anymore. What a pity!” Chuang simply shrugged his shoulders and repeated, “Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows? Only time will tell.”

⑥ A week later, an army officer came and read an announcement from the emperor: “WAR HAS BEGUN! All men between ages 20 and 30 must become soldiers immediately!”

⑦ Chuang’s son had a broken leg, so he couldn’t go to war. Chuang’s neighbors said, “Oh, you’re very lucky that your son can stay home because he’s hurt.” Chuang, once again, shrugged his shoulders and said, “Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows? Only time will tell.” It seems Chuang Lee was a wise old farmer indeed.

A2, A1, AA, AS "Ryoma" 「

① “A hero should go his own way.”
This quote is by Ryoma Sakamoto. He’s a legendary hero who went his own way and changed Japan. He was born in Kochi, Tosa in 1836. As a child, Ryoma did not seem like the hero type.

② "People can say anything about me; I’m the only one who knows what I’ll do."
Many people thought Ryoma was a strange boy. He wasn’t very good in school and hated studying. However, his sister, Otome, took care of him and believed in him.
"In any situation, keep your own ways and don’t give up your special abilities."

③ The fearful and shy Ryoma was bullied in school. He dreamed of becoming a strong person, so Otome sent him to study swordsmanship. His skill with swords would become one of his special abilities.
"I always try to get better and stronger, instead of becoming afraid or worried."

④ Ryoma began training with swords at age 14. In five years, he received his license. Later, he moved to Edo to train and became a master swordsman. He continued this practice for many years, becoming better and stronger.
"My purpose in this world is to accomplish my duty.”

⑤ In 1853, Ryoma witnessed the American black ships coming into Japan. As an adult, he traveled often between Edo and Tosa. After many adventures, he found his purpose in life. Ryoma helped start Japan’s move into the modern world. He was killed at the age of 33, at the beginning of the “Meiji Restoration.” In his short life, he went his own way and became a hero.
